FAQs

How do tutorials work?

Our sessions run for 60 minutes and usually involve the student bringing their questions and relevant class content. However, when this is not possible or if preferred, our tutors will provide practice questions and teaching material. Clear and realistic goals will be set in the first lesson and the tutor’s focus will be to help the student achieve these.

What subjects do you tutor?

Accelerate Tuition offers Level 1-3 NCEA and Scholarship tuition in Science (General Science, Chemistry, Biology and Physics), Maths (L1, L2, Calculus and Statistics), and English. Social Science subjects such as History, Classics, Geography, and Economics are also available in addition to Media Studies and Music.

Do you offer Cambridge/IB tuition?

No, we do not currently offer Cambridge or International Baccalaureate tuition. Our tutors are most familiar with the New Zealand Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and NZQA Scholarship.

Do you accept Ngāi Tahu grants?

Yes, we are an approved Ngāi Tahu Tahua Taunaki Akonga/Learner Support Fund tuition provider (for years 5-13). Applications must be made directly to the Ngāi Tahu Grants Team who require a pre-tuition assessment report from your child’s teacher. Please mention Accelerate Tuition as your chosen tuition provider. Upon an application being approved, invoice requirements received from Ngāi Tahu must be forwarded to us before lessons begin.

Do you offer in-home tuition?

Yes, but this is subject to your location and the tutor’s travel arrangements. In-home tuition costs an extra $10 per tutorial to cover time and travel costs. We prefer that students meet at the UC, Fendalton or Tūranga Libraries. Online tuition over Zoom is available at no extra charge.

Do you offer Yr 9/10, intermediate, or primary school tuition?

We do not offer early primary school (Years 1 - 4) tuition at this stage. However, we are happy to offer Years 5-10 tuition on a case-by-case basis in the general areas of maths, science and English. We also offer preparation for secondary school scholarship exams for years 6-8 students. If your child is sitting NCEA Level 1 exams/internals in Year 9 or 10, we do suggest getting extra tuition to ensure they are well prepared.

How often do you recommend tuition?

If the student is preparing for several internal and external exams within a single subject, we recommend a weekly session during the school term to cover all the necessary content. An internal assessment may just require a few one-off sessions. For multiple subjects, we recommend either splitting the session 50/50, or an hour per subject towards the exam season. Give us a call and we can tailor a programme for your child.

Do you offer trial lessons?

We do not offer a free trial lesson, rather a “risk-free” session. This is standard practice across smaller tutoring businesses and means we won’t charge you for the 10-lesson plan or casual lesson unless you are happy after the first initial lesson. If you are satisfied, the first lesson is charged under the 10-lesson plan or at the casual lesson rate.
